Best Running Shoes Online 2024 – Everything You Need To Know When Buying Running Shoes

best running shoes online 2024

There is a lot to consider when buying running shoes. In this article, I’ll clarify the concepts and help you find the best running shoes online in 2024.

For a couple of years, I’ve been working as an expert at an advice site where I advise on the best products in a variety of different areas of training. It is mainly running that I am an expert in, and since I myself have had running as a passion throughout my life, this is where my greatest expertise lies.

I annually test many new running shoes that come out on the market to get a picture of which are the best running shoes online. Mainly by visiting different physical stores and trying my way through the range. But also by buying (way too) many running shoes during a year.

Since I run at least once a day, I need to have many running shoes in use simultaneously. Here I thought I would go a little closer into the area and give tips on the shoes I think are the best on the market right now.

I have compiled these based on common questions I have received over the years.

Best Running Shoes 2024 – In This Guide

Best Running Shoes 2024
Saucony – my favorite running shoe brand of 2024

A lot has happened in running shoes over the last few years. I would almost be prepared to say that product development is currently the fastest ever. This is good from a consumer point of view as more and more people have access to better running shoes at better prices.

At the same time, it can be confusing. How do I know which shoes are right for my needs? There are many different criteria that determine what is best for your individual needs.

Best Running Shoes Online in 2024 – My Choices

best running shoes online 2024

Below, I’ve compiled some common questions to consider when looking for the best running shoes online for your needs. Here are my picks for the best running shoes online in 2024:

Saucony – Best Running Shoe Brand of 2024

best running shoe brand 2024

It is almost impossible to objectively determine which brand makes the best running shoes. I have used Nike a lot during my years as a runner, but I think that in the last year, there are a couple of other brands that have actually launched better new models of running shoes.

Hoka and One are two of the fastest-growing brands among running shoes and several of their models have impressed me. This includes Hoka’s models in the X series with carbon fiber plate, but especially One’s models where they have now added an extra layer of cushioning that makes the shoes more comfortable than ever before.

best running shoe brands 2024
Hoka and On are the two fastest-growing running shoe brands right now.

The brand that still has the most comfortable running shoes on the market right now in my opinion is Saucony. With models like Triumph 21, Guide 17 and Endorphin Speed 4 and Pro 4, they have some of the most comfortable running shoes on the market right now.

In these shoes, a lot of work has been done on the comfort of the upper and I especially like the slim design of the tongue together with the responsive sole on many of the models. I will definitely run a lot of Saucony in the coming year.

Another brand that deserves a mention is ASICS which has done a lot to improve its classic models, where among other things GEL-Nimbus and GEL-Cumulus are both lighter and more responsive than ever before.

New Balance is also a brand that launched strong models at the beginning of 2024 and this brand will certainly make it into my list during this year. The new New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 is one of the models that I am looking forward to testing very soon.

ASICS Gel-Cumulus 26 – Best Running Shoes for Beginners 2024

best running shoes for beginners 2024

I’ve usually recommended the Asics GT-2000 as a solid running shoe for beginners along with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 30, and it remains a very good entry-level model. But in my opinion, there is an even better model if you are looking for affordable alternatives.

Now, I consider the newly launched ASICS Gel-Cumulus 26 to be the best running shoes online for beginners thanks to its versatility and good cushioning. Besides the cushioning, it also feels stable on the ground and is also very durable.

The newest model features a new heel design and reduced weight to make running even more enjoyable.

ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26 – Running Shoes with the Best Cushioning in 2024

running shoes with best cushioning 2024

The Asics Gel-Nimbus 25 is a shoe model that has received excellent ratings for its comfort and excellent cushioning since its release early last year. Now the newest version of the shoe model has hit the market with the launch of the new Asics Gel-Nimbus 26.

ASICS has promised only minor changes to the successful model, but according to the specifications released, the grip has been improved thanks to the HYBRID ASICSGRIP™ technology. The midfoot area of the shoe has also been upgraded for a better fit. This bodes well since the previous model of the ASICS Gel-Nimbus is already one of the most comfortable running shoes on the market.

Asics running shoes have always had good cushioning, but the Nimbus 26 has several excellent updates that make it both more gentle on the legs and more comfortable to run in.

It’s also lighter in weight and has better energy return than previous models. If you are looking for an affordable running shoe that can be used for both training and competition, I can recommend the Asics Gel-Nimbus 26.

Altra Via Olympus 2 – Best Running Shoes For Wide Feet 2024

Best Running Shoes For Wide Feet 2024

There is one brand above all others for those who need a wide toe box on their running shoes. Altra is a brand that stands out for its running shoes with extra space in the toe box and its running shoes without a drop. The brand is particularly strong in trail running with models such as the Timp, but in November 2023 the latest model of the Via Olympus was also released.

This is a proof of Altra’s efforts to become stronger in road running and it must be said that they have succeeded so far.

The Altra Via Olympus 2 has a soft Altra EGO™ MAX midsole foam and a generous stack height of 33mm. The shoe also has a soft footbed for an improved step-in feel. These shoes are very comfortable on the foot and provide a good running experience.

Hoka Clifton 9 – Best Women’s Running Shoes 2024

Best Women's Running Shoes 2024

Do women really need different types of running shoes than men? Well, there’s a reason why manufacturers have separate men’s and women’s models on most of their running shoes.

In part, this is because women often have wider and lower feet than men. They also have a lower body weight and shorter stride length, which places different demands on running shoes.

One model that is very popular among women is the Hoka Clifton 9, which has all the characteristics that can be required of a good running shoe for women. It is also available in a wider fit to suit all models of feet. It is one of Hoka’s most popular shoe models and continues to be a top seller from year to year and is my favorite of the best running shoes for women in 2024.

ASICS Novablast 4 – Best Running Shoes for Men 2024

Best Running Shoes for Men 2024

If you are looking for a high-quality training shoe, I would recommend the newly launched ASICS Novablast 4 especially for men who need a versatile and comfortable running shoe.

The latest model has introduced the FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO foam, which ensures that you as a runner continue to experience the remarkable bounce and response that we have come to expect from the shoe.

I would recommend this as a quantity shoe for men and then pick up one of the carbon fiber plate models for race day.

ASICS GEL-Kayano 30 – Best Running Shoes against Pronation in 2024

Best running shoes against pronation in 2024

As the best running shoes against pronation right now, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 30 is one of the best choices. This shoe has a 4D Guidance System technology that provides maximum support for the foot. It also has a new PureGel technology that together with FF Blast Plus Eco provides good cushioning.

If you are looking for the best running shoes online against pronation, there are also several other running shoes I can recommend. Asics with its model GT-2000 at the forefront are recognized stable running shoes. The new Saucony Guide 17 is also a reliable shoe model against overpronation. Last year, Asics launched its latest model, the Asics GT-2000 12, which is now better than ever before.

Another running shoe for pronation that I can recommend is the Adidas Solarcontrol. These are running shoes that provide extra stability thanks to adidas LEP 2.0. The shoes are designed to guide every step and push you forward.

The mesh upper has a system that fixes the foot with strategic zones that provide increased support and ventilation. This shoe model has consistently received good reviews from users.

If you are looking for running shoes with pronation support from Nike, the Zoom Structure 24 is the one to go for.

Saucony Triumph 21 – Best Running Shoes for Wide Feet 2024

Best running shoes for wide feet 2024

Too narrow a fit on running shoes is a common problem for many and can also cause a variety of running-related problems. Despite the fact that many brands have now started to launch wider fits on several of their shoe models, there is much to improve in this area.

Saucony Triumph 21 is one of the models I can recommend for you who are looking for the best running shoes for wide feet in 2024. This has good cushioning and also has a soft and comfortable upper that is excellent for wide feet. You can read more about the new Saucony Triumph 21 in this post.

Nike Alphafly 3 – Fastest Running Shoes 2024

Fastest Running Shoes 2024

There’s no doubt which shoe is the hot topic in the running world right now when it comes to running shoes. The Nike Alphafly 3 already has a world record under its belt even before it was launched. It was Kelvin Kiptum who broke the world record in the Chicago Marathon in early October 2023.

Eliud Kipchoge also used Nike Alphafly 3 when he won the Berlin Marathon in September 2023. However, the first time we saw someone use the shoes was already in the London Marathon 2023 when Sifan Hassan used the shoes in his debut race on the course.

Nike Alphafly 3 has several improvements from previous models, including a larger carbon fiber plate, while the new Atomknit 3.0 upper is more comfortable and has better breathability and support for the foot.

One competitor for the title of fastest running shoe in 2024 is the adidas ADIZERO Adios Pro Evo 1, which Tigist Assefa wore when she broke the previous world record with a time of 02:11:53. Several male runners have also won major half-marathon and marathon races with ADIZERO Adios Pro Evo 1 on their feet.

An advantage of these running shoes is definitely the running feel, but the price tag is a deterrent for many.

Hoka Speedgoat 5 – Best Running Shoes for Terrain 2024

Best running shoes for terrain 2024

Among the best trail shoes of 2024, there are a few models that stand out. Nike launched the Pegasus Trail 4 GORE-TEX in 2023, which are waterproof trail running shoes for both men and women. These are also excellent shoes for the winter, but especially as off-road running shoes for the rest of the year if you want to keep your feet dry.

Another off-road running shoe model that got a lot of attention when it was launched is the Nike Ultrafly, which was developed with elite runners in the field.

But the running shoe that I choose as the best running shoe for off-road is Hoka Speedgoat 5. This shoe model is extremely popular among Hoka fans for its outstanding cushioning, aggressive grip and comfortable fit.

I especially appreciate that it has a tongue that keeps debris and snow from getting inside the shoe.

Saucony Pro 4 – Best Running Shoe For Half-Marathon and Marathon 2024

Buying Guide: Running Shoes

Buying Guide: Running Shoes

Selecting the right pair of running shoes is crucial for comfort, performance, and injury prevention. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned runner, understanding your individual needs and the various features of running shoes can make a significant difference. This short guide aims to walk you through the process of choosing the best running shoes for your specific requirements.

Determine Your Running Style and Needs

First, assess the type of running you’ll be doing. Are you hitting the roads, traversing trails, or sprinting on tracks? Your running terrain dictates the shoe design. Frequency is also important; daily runners need more durable shoes than occasional joggers. Lastly, consider the distances you’ll be covering. Sprinters require different shoe features compared to marathon runners.

Understand Your Foot Type and Gait

Your foot type and gait play a pivotal role in shoe selection. If you have flat feet, high arches, or neutral arches, the shoe’s arch support should match. Also, gait analysis, which identifies if you overpronate, underpronate, or have a neutral gait, can help select the right type of shoe. Many running stores offer gait analysis services.

Shoe Features to Consider

Cushioning is key for comfort, especially for long-distance runners, while stability and support are crucial for those with overpronation or flat feet. The outsole material varies; rubber is durable, blown rubber is lightweight, and TPU provides stability. For the upper construction, breathable materials like mesh are ideal for ventilation.

Fit and Comfort

Proper fit is essential. Ensure there’s about a thumb’s width of space in the toe box and that the shoes are snug but not tight. Since feet can swell throughout the day, try on shoes in the evening for a better assessment of fit and comfort.

Brand and Budget Considerations

Familiarize yourself with popular brands like Nike, Adidas, Asics, Brooks, and New Balance. Set a realistic budget, keeping in mind that while expensive shoes often offer more advanced features, they’re not always necessary for every runner.

Read Reviews and Seek Recommendations

Online reviews can be a treasure trove of information. Look for feedback from runners with similar running styles and needs. Additionally, don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from experienced runners or store staff.

Testing and Trial

If possible, test the shoes in-store, ideally on a treadmill. This allows you to get a feel for the shoe in action. Also, inquire about return policies, so you have the option to exchange or return the shoes if they don’t meet your expectations after a few runs.

Additional Tips

Steer clear of outdated models, as newer versions usually feature improved technology and materials. Consider the season – waterproof shoes for wet conditions, breathable ones for hot weather. And if you’re a frequent runner, having two pairs to alternate between can extend the life of each pair.

Best Running Shoes for Winter 2024

best running shoes for winter 2024

A common question I get as a running expert is whether you need different running shoes for winter running. If you want to be able to run casually outdoors on ice and snow, you definitely need studs on your running shoes.

It provides a completely different type of running experience regardless of the road conditions and nowadays running shoes with studs are also much better cushioned, which means they protect your legs from injury.

Here I have summarized some of the reasons why you need different running shoes for winter running:

  • Traction: Winter running shoes often have a sole that is designed to provide better traction on icy and snowy surfaces. This reduces the risk of slipping and injury.
  • Thermal insulation: Winter shoes are usually better insulated than regular running shoes. This helps to keep your feet warm in cold weather, which is not only comfortable but also reduces the risk of frostbite. However, it’s important to make sure that these running shoes are also breathable, so that your feet don’t start to sweat.
  • Waterproofing: Many winter shoes are waterproof or at least water-resistant. This is important because wet feet can quickly become cold in low temperatures, increasing the risk of frostbite.
  • Support and stability: In winter, the ground can be uneven due to snow and ice. Winter shoes are often designed to provide extra support and stability on these surfaces.
  • Longevity: by having separate shoes for winter running, you can extend the lifespan of your regular running shoes as you don’t expose them to the harsh winter conditions.
  • Comfort: Winter shoes are often slightly thicker and have a more robust construction, which can provide extra cushioning and comfort when running in cold weather.

Which Shoe Brand is Best for Running?

Which Shoe Brand is Best for Running?

The most popular running shoe brands in the US are Brooks and Nike, but there are many other brands known for their high-quality running shoes.

Choosing the best shoe brand for running largely depends on individual needs and preferences, including foot shape, running style, and the type of terrain. However, several brands consistently stand out due to their quality, innovation, and range of options.

1. Saucony

Offering a blend of stability and responsiveness, Saucony is another brand favored by many runners. The Saucony Kinvara and Saucony Ride lines are well-known for their lightweight feel and comfortable fit.

2. Hoka

Known for their maximalist cushioning, Hoka One One shoes offer an exceptionally smooth and comfortable running experience. Their thick, soft soles are designed to reduce impact, which is beneficial for long-distance runners and those prone to injuries.

3. Asics

Asics is celebrated for its focus on stability and support, making it a great choice for runners needing extra foot support. The Asics Gel-Kayano and the Asics Gel-Nimbus lines are particularly popular for their gel cushioning technology, which offers excellent shock absorption.

4. Brooks

Specializing in running shoes, Brooks is highly regarded for its quality and commitment to the sport. Their shoes, such as the Brooks Ghost and Brooks Adrenaline GTS, are praised for their balance of cushioning, stability, and durability, making them a great all-around choice for runners.

5. Nike

Known for its cutting-edge technology and wide variety of options, Nike offers shoes that cater to a range of running styles and needs. Their popular models like the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus and Nike React series are renowned for their comfort, durability, and responsive cushioning. Nike’s innovations, like the Nike Air and Nike Flyknit, have also set high standards in the industry.

6. Adidas

Adidas is another top contender, famed for its Boost technology, which provides exceptional energy return and comfort. The Adidas Ultraboost is a favorite among runners for its cushioning and support, while the Adidas Adizero series is well-regarded among competitive runners for its lightweight, performance-oriented design.

Which Running Shoes Do Elite Runners Use?

Which Running Shoes Do Elite Runners Use?

It is impossible to overlook the fact that the majority of elite runners are using the Nike Alphafly or its predecessor Nike Vaporfly 3 right now. Even the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 has become more popular among the elite.

Everyone who has tested these two models knows that the running experience is extraordinary. It is no coincidence that many records have been broken with these two shoe models on their feet.

Elite shoe models have never been more one-sided than they are today. Currently, virtually all elite runners use shoes with carbon fiber plates such as Nike Air Zoom Alphafly, Nike Vaporfly 3 (above) or Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3.

But many other brands such as ASICS and HOKA have also launched premium models of racing shoes with carbon fiber plates in recent years. We have seen more and more elite runners wearing these shoes on race day in recent years.

elite runners shoes 2024

I myself mainly prefer Nike’s models, but have also run many sessions with Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 and Adidas PrimeX, as I mentioned above.

Another shoe model from Adidas that definitely competes in performance with the premium models from Nike is the mentioned Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 (below). This shoe model is also often seen on top runners in various half marathons and marathons around the world.

Which Running Shoes Do Elite Runners Use 2024

So what is the model that is mainly used by elite runners? This is a difficult question to answer. In the 2022 Berlin Marathon world record race, Eliud Kipchoge used Alphafly, but we’ve also seen plenty of elite runners use Vaporfly in record-breaking races over the past year. In the 2023 Boston Marathon, the top three men’s runners had Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 on their feet.

So it’s hard to say which shoe is better. I personally like shoes like Alphafly or Prime X better because my feet like the higher sole due to my problems with Morton’s Neuroma. But at the same time, the Vaporfly is also very fast and with enough cushioning to avoid these problems.

The Vaporfly is slightly lighter and has a slightly higher heel drop, which is considered to provide better roll in the stride. This may also be the reason why many of the elite prefer this model. But which model is better is really a matter of taste in my opinion. The advantage of Vaporfly is that it is slightly cheaper than Alphafly.

I have previously written a review of the previous models of Nike’s Vaporfly models that you can read here. You can also read more about the new Vaporfly 3 in a separate article.

How To Choose Running Shoes Online?

How To Choose Running Shoes Online?

A common question among beginners looking for the best running shoes online is how to choose running shoes. First of all, it’s important to think about when you plan to use your running shoes. Will you use them for outdoor winter running or will it be mainly on the treadmill? Do you like to run off-road? All of this affects the choice of running shoes.

Toe space on running shoes is also a common question I personally get when advising beginners. In this regard, my advice is always to choose at least one size larger than your regular shoes. Many people are afraid that the shoes will fall off or feel loose during use.

However, when you get used to having plenty of toe room, this is not something you think about. It is always most important that there is plenty of wiggle room in the toes for the running shoes to feel comfortable.

How Should Running Shoes Feel?

How Should Running Shoes Feel

Running shoes and toe space is a recurring questions in this case as well. When you press your toes, there should be a gap of a few centimetres from the tip of the toe to the front of the shoe.

This is especially important if you run longer distances. Otherwise, you are guaranteed to get sick toenails after longer runs.

Otherwise, the running feeling is also individual. But one thing I want to draw your attention to is choosing running shoes with good energy return. Try out shoes before you buy. If they have a poor energy return, running shoes are rarely optimal for anything other than treadmill running.

Should You Go Up or Down a Size in Running Shoes?

Should You Go Up or Down a Size in Running Shoes?

Choosing the right size for running shoes is crucial for comfort and performance. Here’s a general guideline on whether you should go up or down a size in running shoes:

Go Up a Size

Feet Swelling: During running, your feet can swell due to increased blood flow and pressure. This means you might need a slightly larger size than your normal shoe size to accommodate this swelling.

Toe Room: It’s important to have about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This space allows for natural foot expansion while running and helps prevent issues like blisters or black toenails.

Width Fit: If your feet are wider, you might need to go up a size or look for shoes that offer wider fittings to ensure comfort.

Stay True to Size or Go Down:

Snug Fit: Running shoes should fit snugly, but not too tightly. They should not slip at the heel or feel constrictive. If you’re between sizes, it’s often better to stick with your true size rather than going larger.

Brand-Specific Sizing: Some brands might run larger or smaller. It’s always a good idea to try them on or check size guides and reviews for specific advice on a particular brand or model.

Other Considerations

Socks: Consider the thickness of the socks you plan to run in. Thicker socks might require a bit more room in the shoe.

Gait Analysis: Sometimes, a professional gait analysis at a specialty running store can help determine the best size and type of shoe based on your running style.

Ultimately, the best approach is to try on different sizes and go for a short test run if possible. Comfort and fit are highly personal, so what works for one runner may not work for another.

Remember, poorly fitting shoes can lead to discomfort and injuries, so it’s worth taking the time to find the right fit.

What To Consider When Buying Running Shoes Online

What To Consider When Buying Running Shoes Online

The choice of running shoes is one of the most complex. When choosing the best running shoes online, there are many different things to consider. Here are some of them:

  • Purpose of use: First and foremost is the purpose of use, which we will discuss in more detail below. You need to know in which context you will mainly use your running shoes.
  • Body type and experience: We also all have different body types and backgrounds. This greatly affects the shoes you should use. Many beginners have issues that require them to find running shoes that are good for knees or running shoes that are good for the Achilles tendon – just to name a few common running-related issues.
  • Your feet: Of course, the shoes should also fit your feet well. If you have wide feet, you can’t force yourself into narrow shoes regardless of whether the shoe model would otherwise be optimal for you. Fortunately, nowadays, more and more brands have started to produce more universal models that should fit most feet.
  • Budget: Quality often goes hand in hand with price – but not always. If you run a lot and know that you will use running shoes often, you may be willing to pay more for a pair of running shoes.

Which Running Shoes To Buy?

which running shoes should I buy 2024

You should think about practicality rather than design and visuals when it comes to running shoes. Since running is hard on your bones and joints, they should suit your unique needs.

Those with problems with the Achilles tendon should choose running shoes without a heel cup. There are many running shoes that are good for the Achilles tendon on the market right now as more and more people have chosen to manufacture running shoes with a soft heel cup.

Those who have wide feet should also make sure to find running shoes for wide feet. These are two examples of things to consider when choosing running shoes. Comfort is among the first factors to consider.

Which Running Shoes Are Right For Me?

Which Running Shoes Are Right For Me?

Which running shoes are right for you is an individual matter. Those who are overweight should consider having good cushioning on their shoes. In the early 2010s, there was a trend towards running shoes with a barefoot feel.

Now, however, we can see that more and more shoe manufacturers are producing shoes with better cushioning instead. Nike, among others, is a pioneer in this area, and with its Vaporfly and sub 2-hour projects, has developed several models with maximum cushioning.

It turned out that several elite runners in the project wanted shoes with good cushioning rather than thin and minimalist running shoes. Running shoes for heavy runners and overweight people should always have good cushioning. There are no exceptions to this rule.

How Many Running Shoes Do I Need?

How Many Running Shoes Do I Need?

The number of running shoes you need depends mainly on how often you use them. One pair may be enough if you only run a couple of times a week and avoid using the shoes in everyday life.

If you run daily, you should use at least two pairs of running shoes. If you use them too often, there is a risk that sweat and other moisture will prematurely wear out the materials in the sole and upper of the shoe.

Shoes should always be completely dry before each use to ensure they last as long as possible. Avoid using running shoes in everyday life if you want them to retain their performance characteristics for as long as possible.

How Many Miles Can Running Shoes Be Used?

How Many Miles Can Running Shoes Be Used?

A common question for those looking for running shoes is how many miles you can wear them before it is time to abandon them. There is no clear-cut answer to this question.

Wear and tear on shoes depends on both the user and the quality of the shoe. If you have a light step and the shoe is also really durable, you can easily use these for up to 1000 miles before changing.

But it’s very much about the feel of the shoe. If you notice that the shoes have lost cushioning and, even with eye measurements, can see that the sole has formed after use, it may be time to abandon them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Running Shoes

Which running shoes are suitable for me?

This is individual. Above all, consider the context in which you use your running shoes and your build. If you are a beginner or overweight, it is a good idea to get running shoes with good cushioning.

How should running shoes feel?

Unlike shoes used in everyday life, running shoes should have extra toe room. Take a size larger than you normally wear to be on the safe side.

Which running shoes are best?

This is difficult to give a clear answer to. The shoe model that is best for some may be a poor choice for others. Since we all have different backgrounds and running styles, there are several factors to consider when choosing running shoes. We also all have different types of feet that require specific shoe models.

How many running shoes do you need?

This largely depends on how often they are used. If you run every day of the week, you may need at least 3 different shoe models to choose from. This is because running shoes last longer if you let them air out properly between uses. For those who run 3 days a week, even one pair may be enough.
